A few things you’d like to clear up first? Maybe you’re not sure why it’s worth comparing van insurance, you don’t how long it takes or you don’t know what cover you need?

So we’ve compiled the following simple answers to questions frequently thought, about finding cheap quotes when comparing van insurance.

This should not be constructed as advice and is guidance only.

What are the different types of van insurance?

There are a number of policy types available for van owners. It’s worth considering how you use your van to pick the right insurance cover for you.

Third party only – This cover is the minimum required by law. It covers you for any damage you cause to other people and their vehicles. However, it won’t cover repairs to your own van, personal medical expenses or theft.

Third party fire and theft – This offers the same cover as third party, with added protection in case of fire or theft.

Comprehensive – This includes all the cover of a third-party fire and theft policy, but also protects you from and covers repairs to your van in the event of an accident.

Can I get a quote for my courier van?

Whether it’s a large courier van or a pick-up truck, as long as it’s not over 3.5 tonnes, you can still compare van insurance quotes with us. If you’ve modified your van, for example, the bodywork, engine or exhaust, be sure to mention it; we’ll help you find a deal that’s right for you.

What information do I need to compare van insurance?

The following can be useful when comparing van insurance quotes:

Vehicle details – Make sure you have the make, model and details of any modifications of your vehicle to hand. If you’re unsure, your V5C document may have this information.

Recent insurance documents – Again, these will contain most of the details required for a quote. They are also worth referring to for up-to-date claims information, as this could influence the prices you’re quoted.

Recent conviction details – It’s essential you are upfront about past convictions, such as speeding penalties, to get the best insurance deal.

What factors could affect the cost of my van insurance?

If you’re looking to get the best possible price on your van insurance, be aware that there may be factors which affect your premium. These include your no claims discount, voluntary excess and the type of lock or alarm you use.

No claims discount – This is likely to be a renewal reminder or a cancellation letter from your current insurance provider.

Driving licence number – Your driving licence number may enable some insurance providers to reduce your premium as it gives them the most up-to-date information.

Voluntary excess – This counts for how much you choose to pay upfront in the event of a claim. Providers usually add an additional compulsory excess on top of this amount. So, make sure you check your allowance, as you will have to pay both excesses.

Locks and immobilisers – Vehicles with extra security, such as an approved alarm, immobiliser and/or tracker can be cheaper to insure.
