We appreciate that questions on comparing car insurance prices can be a little too boring to be asked. Nonetheless, they can be thought.
So, we’ve compiled the following simple answers to questions frequently thought, about finding cheap quotes when comparing multi-car insurance.
This should not be constructed as advice and is guidance only.
What is multi-car insurance?
A multi-car insurance policy, which can usually cover up to five cars, offers all the same benefits as regular policies. If you own up to five cars under single car insurance policies then you may be able to combine them into a singular multi-car deal under one insurer, which could say you money.
The one difference is that the same policy covers more than one car, and insurers will offer you a discount for insuring multiple vehicles under their policy. This logic applies when it comes to multi-car breakdown cover, with discounts being offered to those who have purchase cover for multiple vehicles under the same policy.
You can usually choose different levels of multi-car insurance and different excesses for each of the vehicles, all of which must be registered at the same address. The 12-month policy generally kicks in on the date that the last car insurance is up for renewal – short term cover will be given to other cars in the interim.
For example, say you have one car that needs to be insured in February and another in June; although the February car will be the first to be re-insured, your multi-car insurance policy will and in June the following year once the second vehicle has been insured for a full 12 months.
The vehicles covered must generally be for private use only, though, while the drivers covered by the policy can only drive all the cars insured if they are registered as named drivers for them.
Why choose multi-car insurance?
Multi-car insurance provides cover for up to five cars. It can be a wise option for households with more than one car to think about researching multi-car policies, as one policy provides all the paperwork needed for each vehicle and the renewal date for each car is identical.
A comprehensive multi-car insurance plan can include the following as optional or add-on:
- First car discount
- No claims bonus match
- European cover
- Personal injury cover
- Windscreen repair
- Courtesy car
- Sat-nav cover
- Stereo cover
- Emergency helpline
Some insurers offer discounts for every additional car you add to the policy so it is worth finding out whether you can save money on a different policy or if you’re entitled to any new benefits.
Will a multi-car insurance quote be cheaper?
Despite the attractive discounts available, a multi-car insurance policy will not be the cheapest option for everyone.
Consequently, it is always worth comparing the overall cost with the quotes you get for insuring each vehicle separately, as you may find that individual policies still offer better value for money.
Often, this will depend on the value and performance of the cars concerned, as well as the experience and safety record of the drivers.
What types of multi-car insurance are there?
As with single car insurance, there are three types of car insurance policies to choose from:
- Third party only – this is the minimum legal requirement. It only covers the cost of compensating other people for injury or damage done by you. It doesn’t provide you with any financial help for injury or repairs to your vehicle.
- Third party, fire and theft – this covers the cost of damage or injury to third parties, but it will also give you compensation if your car is damaged due to fire or theft or if it is stolen.
- Comprehensive – as the name suggests, this will cover you for third party, fire and theft as well as damage caused to your vehicle. It could also include compensation for a number of things such as medical treatment, legal expenses and accidental damage.
It’s also worth knowing that the typical car insurance policy lasts for 12 months and will need to be renewed each year. Your insurance might automatically renew when it’s about to expire, so remember to come back to cuuver.com to get the deal that’s right for you.
What details do I need to get a multi-car insurance quote?
When you search for multi-car insurance quotes, you’ll be asked all sorts of questions about you and your car; things like the car’s make, model and age, as well as details of your age, where you live, and the type of job you do. You’ll also be asked about how you use the car – whether or not you commute to work in it, use it for business purposes or just for pleasure. You should also know how many years of no claims discount you have (you’ll also need proof of this if you’re switching insurance provider).
Be prepared to answer questions about your driving history, too, and be honest about any driving convictions you have – if you don’t tell up front then you could end up invalidating your policy.
