Quotes from the top car insurance providers
We do appreciate that questions about comparing car insurance prices are a little too boring to be asked, but they can be thought.
So we’ve compiled the following simple answers to questions frequently thought, about finding a cheap quote if you have a driving conviction.
This should not be constructed as advice and is guidance only.
Can you get insurance if you have driving convictions?
Yes, but it costs more and not many insurers will cover you. Even though you will pay more, you can still cut the cost by comparing policies to find the best deal.
What convictions are accepted?
Each insurer will have different policies, but most will still offer cover if you were previously convicted of:
- Drink driving
- Non-driving related criminal convictions
Some insurers may also accept convictions for driving without insurance, dangerous driving and driving without a license.
Check the policy before you apply for a quote to make sure you can get cover with your conviction, and be prepared to find that many insurers may charge you more as a result.
If you have been disqualified from driving, you cannot get a policy until you have served your ban.
Do you need to declare your convictions?
When you have served the rehabilitation period of your conviction it becomes spent and you no longer have to disclose it. You can use the Unlock website to find out if your convictions are spent.
Your car insurance policy will be invalid if you do not declare your convictions, and any claim you make will be rejected.
How to keep down the cost of car insurance for convicted drivers
Once you have found cover, there are various ways that drivers with convictions can keep the cost of convicted driver insurance premiums down.
One way to do this is to raise your excess. The excess is the portion of any insurance claim, which you must pay yourself. However, don’t make it so high that you wouldn’t be able to cover it in the event you do make a claim, as this defeats the point of having motor insurance.
Try to drive less, too – the lower your mileage, the less your premiums will cost.
Ensuring your car is secure can also reduce the cost of cover. Keep it in a garage if possible, and make sure the car is fitted with an approved alarm and immobiliser.
Another option could be telematics car insurance. This is becoming an increasingly popular option for young drivers or motorists with convictions, who are usually on the receiving end of above average car insurance prices.
Otherwise known as black box insurance, this works by having a black box recording device installed in the policy holders vehicle. It will then record driving behaviours and the number of miles completed in an attempt to provide a fairer premium, which is based on the policy holders actual driving abilities rather than statistics.
